Agile is now well established as a way for individual engineering teams to plan their work, leveraging short iterations to learn and adapt as customer and technical understanding increases over the duration of a project. But for many companies, scaling this to the Enterprise level is much more challenging and the momentum of functional silos and annual planning can be hard to break. At Vistaprint we’ve been experimenting for a few years on how to apply agile principles to enterprise level planning. Two years ago we started using an ‘Enterprise Visibility Room’ or EVR to enable the entire business to visualize the enterprise backlog and understand capacity tradeoffs. The article below provides an excellent description of the journey we went through. We have since evolved our EVR – something that we can cover in a future article, but to know where we’ve come it’s important to understand the foundation.
